It’s the Ricky Gervais Golden Globe Awards 2012!
Against all odds, one might say, the provocative comedian Ricky Gervais will host the Golden Globes ceremony on January 15th. It remains to be seen if he steals the show yet again or if the limelight will shine on what the awards are actually about, that is quality cinema and television. Ok, who are we kidding?! We know it’s really about who Gervais decides to roast (Ashton Kuchar a prime candidate this year!), but there has also been some amazing TV and films made in the last year.
The French director Michel Hazanavicius has created a stir in Hollywood with his first English silent/speaking movie “The Artist”. The Frenchman is tipped to win the Golden Globe for Best Director (1.45 to win), ahead of legendries such as Martin Scorsese “Hugo” (5.00 to win) and Woody Allen “Midnight In Paris” (20.00 to win). “The Artist” is also a massive favourite to win a Globe for best Comedy/Musical (1.13 to win).
Alexander Payne had a big breakthrough with his movie “Sideways” eight years ago and now demonstrates his strength in character studies with “The Descendants”, a movie starring George Clooney as a wealthy land baron trying to reconnect with his daughters. “The Descendants” is 1.65 to win Best Motion Picture – Drama, with the main contenders being Martin Scorsese’s 1930s Parisian tale “Hugo” (4.00 to win) and Steven Spielberg’s “War Horse” (5.50 to win), the adaption of the famous stage play.
The Best Animated Film looks like a two horse race between the industry’s giants, Pixar and Steven Spielberg. Interestingly, “Cars 2” (2.15 to win) is the last movie made under Steve Jobs while “The Adventures of Tintin” (2.50 to win) is Steven Spielberg’s first animated film..
Pedro Almodovar’s movie “The Skin I Live In”, a fascinating depiction of Antonio Banderas as a genius plastic surgeon, is the favuorite to win a Globe for Best Foreign Language Film at 1.75. Angelina Jolie’s first ever feature movie has received very mixed reviews but is nevertheless second favourite at 3.50. Her movie “In The Land of Blood and Honey” is set in Bosnia during the Balkan war.
HBO is dominating the Best Television Series - Drama category with Boardwalk Empire (2.25 to win) and Game Of Thrones (2.75 to win). On a less serious note, Fox is a hot favourite to win Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy with either Glee (2.50 to win) or New Girl (2.25 to win).
“Another fascinating year and I am still in shock that Gervais was asked back – I guess all the controversy got people talking about the Globes more than the Oscars and so no publicity is bad publicity!” says Erik Backlund Head of Unibet Sportsbook.
“Bryan Cranston is my hot favourite at 1.90 to pick up his first Golden Globe for the excellent “Breaking Bad”. He has won 3 Emmys for the role so is due a Globe for Best Performance in a Television Series. But the buzz about silent film “The Artist” is deafening and I would not be surprised if it ends up with 5 Globes on the night – it is my film of the year!”
